The Essentially Ellington Program

A free program for high school jazz bands, Essentially Ellington aims to elevate musicianship, broaden perspectives and inspire performance.

All ensembles participating in the BYU Essentially Ellington Regional Jazz Festival are required to join the free Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2016–2017 Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program.

When you join the program, you receive:

  • Orchestra transcriptions
  • Reference recordings
  • Teaching guides
  • Newsletters and other resources

You can join the program online by visiting the Essentially Ellington website (opens in a new tab) and completing an online membership form

One of the three compositions you perform must be from Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Series. All eligible Essentially Ellington Series charts are published by Alfred Publishing Company and prominently feature an Essentially Ellington logo on the cover of the conductor’s score. Remember that in addition to the free charts received through membership with the 2016-17 Essentially Ellington program, you may also elect to perform any of the previously published charts. For a complete list of all the titles in the Essentially Ellington library, visit the Essentially Ellington website (opens in a new tab) and select “Repertoire and Recordings.”
